Substance abuse is a serious problem that courses through many lives; however, there are treatment centers that can help an alcoholic or addict to recover and return to a normal life. Substance abuse treatment methods can be more effective if family members are involved and engaged in helping the family member return to good health and a more positive way of living, though there is no set of rules in rehabilitation.
Because each family is different in handling someone in their family who suffers from addiction, rehabilitation methods are different for every person. Substance abuse professionals can help the patient and family find the best form of treatment for whomever suffers from this disease.
It can’t be emphasized enough the importance of a family being involved in helping a person who has a drug or alcohol addiction when possible. Communicating in a healthy and caring way can do much to help a loved one come to terms with their addiction and finding help in a recovery program.
Once a decision has been made by the individual and his or her family on a substance abuse treatment program, he or she will enter an inpatient or outpatient treatment program. If an outpatient program is selected, patients will not be kept separated from their families. Programs at an outpatient facility are often close to their home and patients are able to continue their addiction program and in the evening, return home to their family.
An inpatient program is where the individual goes to a facility where they undergo detoxification first and then on to a rehabilitation program. With an inpatient program, success remains with following the program the whole way through. Family involvement; however, is encouraged, as well as interaction with family and friends.
In addition, some inpatient and outpatient programs also encourage family and friends to attend Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meetings. These programs are free, held in many parts of the US and around the world and give great support to those who want to understand and help those who suffer from these addictions, directly and indirectly. These programs offer information on helping an addict get help with an addiction, build a family through the addiction therapy process and give information on supporting yourself and your loved one through the recovery process.
It is important to note that there is no clear and concise end to an addiction therapy process. That is why attending an Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meeting can give you support and continuing education on this very important topic. Because drug and alcohol addiction are looked upon as family diseases, family therapy and involvement can make the difference in failure or success when treating this situation.
These meetings also help family members who are emotionally suffering from watching how their loved one deteriorates right before their eyes. Families also learn from Al-Anon and Nar-Anon meetings the importance of not enabling or being codependent with one who is suffering from an addiction.
Families also learn how important it is to encourage their loved one toward a more positive and healthy lifestyle. To be clear, it is very important that families who want to help their loved one overcome an addiction, to be vigilant and loving throughout the recovery process.
